The Swedish Armed forces are very fast transforming from a defence against an invasion to a force of achievement.Traditions and ceremonials are changed and regenerated. An important part of these traditions concerns the heraldic coat of arms which, since the Middle-Age, are used as military distinguishing signs which derive their origins from national symbols, county coat of arms and figureheads.

The National Museums of Military History with mission of supporting the knowledge about the Swedish Armed forces from the Viking Age and about its part within the development of the society, consider a documentation and presentation of the Armed
forces coat of arms during the 20th century as important.

During the centuries the heraldic tradition has followed the development of the Armed forces by means of new coat of arms for new branches within it have been produced continuously. At the same time the heraldic heritage has been guarded and handled in a correct way at amalgamations and discontinuings of military units. Today the National Museums of Military History, in cooperation with the National heraldist, are responsible for this task.

This book is the first collection of 393 heraldic coat of arms which used, revised and used again for more than 300 years, are a rich military, heraldic and cultural heritage, a heritage which is still in use and because of that may raise an extra interest both in the
public and the Armed forces.
